Where to Stay in Bologna Without a Car (2026)
You can stay in Bologna without a car. Bologna Centrale is 1.55 km, about 20 minutes on foot from Piazza Maggiore, so your hotel choice mainly decides how often you make that walk.
We measured the walk from 11 hotels in our main guide to the station and to Piazza Maggiore. The table below shows the result. The sections after it explain what each base means for arrivals, day trips, buses and luggage.

This page is for travelers who arrive by train or plane and do not rent a car. If the fair is why you are coming, read our trade fair calendar: the station hotels are a 25 to 28 minute walk from the fair entrances.

The times use pedestrian routing on OpenStreetMap data, from each hotel’s address to the station and to Piazza Maggiore. Treat them as a guide: your pace and the exact door make a difference.

The trade-off is clear. Starhotels Excelsior and Royal Hotel Carlton put Bologna Centrale two to seven minutes away, but Piazza Maggiore is 16 to 19 minutes on foot. The three measured hotels that stay within 18 minutes of both are Dopa Hostel, Hotel University and Hotel Corona d’Oro 1890.
Stay Near the Station if Trains Drive Your Trip
Choose the station side when your itinerary includes several train days or an early departure. Starhotels Excelsior is two minutes from Bologna Centrale and Royal Hotel Carlton is seven. The Social Hub Bologna is eight minutes away, on the far side of the station from the old center in the Bolognina district.
The way into the center is Via Indipendenza, which Bologna Welcome describes as the main street running from Piazza Maggiore to the Central Station and today the city’s shopping street.
The cost is distance from the old center. Piazza Maggiore is 16 to 19 minutes from the two hotels beside the station and 27 to 34 minutes from The Social Hub and Combo Bologna in Bolognina. If most of your days are spent in the historic center and you take few train trips, that repeated walk is a reason to stay farther south.
A Train-Focused Day From the Station Side
From Starhotels Excelsior you are two minutes from the platforms, and from Royal Hotel Carlton seven. That makes an early train simple, and you do not need a taxi at the start of the day.
When you return in the evening, Piazza Maggiore is 16 to 19 minutes away on foot from those two hotels. A TPER bus is the other option. TPER’s winter 2026 to 2027 timetables, valid from September 15, 2026 to June 5, 2027, list Stazione Centrale, Ugo Bassi and Rizzoli among the stops of line 25 and line 30. Check TPER’s live route for your date, because diversions can change the stops.
Stay in the Historic Center to Walk Straight Into the City
Choose the historic center when the city itself is the focus. The measured hotels in and around the core are three to nine minutes on foot from Piazza Maggiore, while their station walks range from 15 to 27 minutes.
The streets change by cluster. Piazza Santo Stefano, as Bologna Welcome’s square page puts it, is the open space that runs from Via Santo Stefano to the Santo Stefano complex. Around the Two Towers, the former Jewish ghetto keeps a maze of alleys and covered passages, with Via dell’Inferno at the heart of the district.
With luggage, plan the transfer before you arrive. TPER’s fare page lists an urban ticket at €2.30, valid for 75 minutes. Paying contactless at the validator costs the same, while a ticket bought on board costs €2.50.
A City-Focused Day From the Historic Center
From Art Hotel Commercianti or Grand Hotel Majestic già Baglioni, Piazza Maggiore is three minutes away on the measured route. Albergo Garisenda is four minutes from the square and Hotel Touring is nine.
If you add a train trip, allow for the other side of the trade-off. These hotels are 15 to 27 minutes from Bologna Centrale on foot, or you can take a TPER bus and walk the rest.
On a departure day, luggage storage can save you from crossing the center twice with bags. Radical Storage lists drop-off points across Bologna from €3.90 per bag per day. Check its booking page for the points and opening hours on your date.
The In-Between: University Quarter and Ghetto Ebraico
If you want to shorten both walks, the middle of the route gives you three measured options. Dopa Hostel is 16 minutes from the station and 15 from Piazza Maggiore. Hotel University is 17 and 10. Hotel Corona d’Oro 1890 is 18 and 5.
The University quarter is centered on Via Zamboni, which Bologna Welcome calls the university street, and on Piazza Verdi, where Palazzo Paleotti and the Municipal Theatre face the square, as the Piazza Verdi page describes. It puts you inside the university district without moving as far from the station as Santo Stefano.
The Ghetto Ebraico keeps its medieval layout of narrow alleys near the Two Towers. Hotel Corona d’Oro 1890 is five minutes from Piazza Maggiore and 18 from Bologna Centrale.
Getting In and Out Without a Car
From Bologna Airport, the Marconi Express reaches Bologna Centrale in about 7 minutes and costs €12.80 one way. It runs from 5:40 a.m. to midnight, and bus line Q covers the airport to station corridor between midnight and 5:40 a.m. Our Bologna transport guide compares the airport options in more detail.
For a central hotel there is a useful detail. Marconi Express tickets are also valid on TPER urban lines for 75 minutes after validation at the turnstiles, except the Flex solo Bus 949 ticket. That can cover the bus from Bologna Centrale toward the center. Check the validation rules for your ticket type.
If you arrive late or with heavy bags, a private transfer is the alternative to the train and the bus.
From the station, the rest depends on your base. Starhotels Excelsior, Royal Hotel Carlton and The Social Hub are two to eight minutes away on foot, the three middle options are 16 to 18 minutes away, and the central hotels in the table are 15 to 27 minutes away.
Late Arrivals and Early Departures
RFI’s page for Bologna Centrale lists waiting areas, toilets, luggage storage, food and drink outlets, vending machines, a minimarket and a pharmacy. It does not publish opening hours for each outlet, so check the operator before you rely on food or staffed luggage storage on a late arrival or an early departure.
Radical Storage is the other luggage option, with partner locations across Bologna from €3.90 per bag per day. Opening hours vary by location, so the closest point is not automatically the one that fits an early train.
For first and last train times, check Trenitalia or your train operator for your travel date. Times vary by route and timetable period, so this guide does not state them.
If you do rent a car at some point, read the ZTL warning in our main where-to-stay guide before you drive into the center.
Which Base Fits Your Trip?
For one or two nights built around trains, Starhotels Excelsior has the shortest station walk in the table at two minutes. Royal Hotel Carlton is seven minutes away and cuts the walk to Piazza Maggiore to 16 minutes.
For a city-focused stay, Art Hotel Commercianti and Grand Hotel Majestic già Baglioni are both three minutes from Piazza Maggiore in our measurements. Their station walks are 21 and 15 minutes. Hotel Touring gives you a Santo Stefano base nine minutes from the square, but the station walk rises to 27 minutes.
For the smallest compromise between station and center, look at Dopa Hostel, Hotel University and Hotel Corona d’Oro 1890. All three stay within 18 minutes of both.
Our guide to day trips from Bologna by train covers Florence, Venice, Modena, Parma and Ravenna. Use it to decide how many station days you actually have before you choose your hotel.
